The Boldt Company awarded construction of two clean energy plants

APPLETON, WI, February 8, 2018–The Boldt Company, together with its prime subcontractor AZCO, Inc., was awarded construction of the F.D. Kuester Generating Station in Marquette County, Michigan and the A.J. Mihm Generating Station in Baraga County, Michigan. The plants will be owned and operated by Upper Michigan Energy Resources Corporation (UMERC), a subsidiary of WEC Energy Group.

The projects are estimated at $275 million and will generate approximately 180 megawatts of natural gas-fueled energy when completed. Both are scheduled to begin foundation installation in spring of 2018 with final completion dates in early 2019. The projects are highly collaborative and involve the following partners:

  • Burns and McDonnell, Michigan, Inc. is responsible for overall engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the sites.
  • The Boldt Company will provide construction services for the foundations, erection of structural steel and balance of plant components.
  • AZCO will install the above-ground piping.
  • Wärtsilä, an engine manufacturer headquartered in Finland, will provide and set ten Wärtsilä 18V50SG reciprocating engine power generators.
  • The Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council in Upper Michigan will provide labor support to the project.

The Boldt Company recently completed a similar project for Minnesota’s Rochester Public Utilities using comparable technology. “We are proud of our track record building Wärtsilä facilities and collaborating with great partners,” said Boldt CEO Tom Boldt. “Teamwork on complex projects like this generates the most innovative and cost-effective ideas for our customers.”

The projects represent one of the largest economic developments in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and will help provide long-term energy stability for businesses and consumers in the region.

“The construction of these two facilities is part of our power generation fleet reshaping plan. They will provide a long-term and affordable solution to the Upper Peninsula generation needs,” said Tom Metcalfe, executive vice president of Power Generation for WEC Energy Group.

“Boldt and AZCO are the right partners to build these plants,” said Rick Halil, president and general manager of Burns & McDonnell’s Energy Division. “They have an experienced team, local labor leadership and proven record of safety and quality performance on energy projects.”
